This pebble had a very rough exterior like large grit sandpaper, almost all marble pebbles have a rough appearance but are smooth to touch. So I wasn't even sure it was marble until I made the first cut. It turned out to be quite fine and strong grey marble, why it should have had such a rough exterior is a mystery.
The shape of the pebble said 'scorpion' so that's what appeared. There are what appear to be some natural fault lines at the top of the pebble, unfortunately the part that will be the tail, I therefore applied some superglue to the fault lines, capillarity did the rest, completion of the tail was left to last. As with the black spider sculpture the legs become progressively more delicate, so the feet were finished very carefully first and the whole piece bonded to its base before completing the final finishing and polishing.
Temporary wooden struts were bonded to the underside of the claws for support during the final finishing.
